Elijah scanned the news on his tablet, an article of particular interest catching his eye. As he read, his brow furrowed, and his lips tugged downwards into an uncharacteristic frown. He glanced across at Sophia, who sat opposite him on the park bench, engrossed in a book.
"Hey, Sophia," he said, interrupting her peaceful reading. "It seems one of Australia's oldest chocolate brands has collapsed."
Sophia peered over her book, eyebrows raised in surprise. "You mean Ernest Hillier Chocolates?"
Elijah chuckled, holding up the tablet. "You know your chocolate history, don't you? What's your secret, sneaking into Willy Wonka's library?"
She laughed. "It's not my fault that chocolate has always been more interesting than calculus."
He grinned, then his smile faded. "Apparently, they've been operating since 1914, and now they're kaput because of a supply chain crisis."
Sophia shook her head, a small smile playing at her lips. "Sounds like they got caught in a sticky, chocolatey situation."
"Sure, a supply chain crisis." Elijah snorted, adopting a serious tone, "When we all know the real reason was their factory was overrun by rogue kangaroos who developed a taste for the sweet stuff."
Sophia burst into laughter. "Imagine that, a kangaroo heist!"
Elijah leaned back, a gleam in his eyes. "Imagine a kangaroo trying to hop away inconspicuously with pockets full of chocolate."
Sophia pointed at him. "I see what you did there. 'Hop away,' nice pun, Elijah."
"The sweetest pun, if I do say so myself." He replied, grinning widely. They both giggled, their laughter filling the park.
After a moment, Elijah turned back to the tablet. "The article also says that some restaurants are also closing down. There's this place called Flipp Burgers, Little Viet Kitchen, and... oh, get this, Karen's Diner."
Sophia snorted, trying to hide a smirk. "Karen's Diner? Well, I bet they had a hell of a customer service."
"True that!" Elijah chuckled, imagining the scene. "I heard they prided themselves on having rude staff. Kinda fits, doesn't it?"
"Perfectly," Sophia laughed. "And I can only imagine what happened when a real Karen walked into Karen's Diner."
Elijah pretended to hold a microphone, imitating a newscaster, "In breaking news, Karen meets Karen at Karen's Diner. Stay tuned for the explosive reality TV episode."
Their laughter echoed through the park, birds taking flight from the trees. Through the puns and jokes, they found a way to lighten a dark situation. And as the sun started to set, painting the sky with hues of gold and crimson, the friends continued their banter, turning the melancholic news into a source of shared amusement.
